Brief Demography of Churachandpur District:

 Population

As per the Census 2011, the district has total population of 274143 which constitute 9.59% of the total state population. The total population consist of 138820 males and 135323 females. The schedule tribe and schedule caste population form the 92.94 percent and 0.16 percent of the total population respectively. The decadal growth rate for 2001-2011 is 20.29%

 Sex Ratio

As per the Census 2011, Churachandpur district has the sex ratio of 975 females per 1000 males. However, the sex ratio for the 3 Census towns of Churachandpur (Rengkai, Zenhang Lamka & Hill Town) is exceptionally high with 1004

 Literacy Rate

The literacy rate in the district as per Census 2011 is 82.78 percent which is the second highest among the districts of Manipur. The male and female literacy rates in the district are 86.97 percent and 78.50 percent respectively.

 Density of Population

The district recorded a very low density of population which is 60 persons per sq.km. The figure is attributed to its large area of 4,570sq.km being the largest district in Manipur and due to its hilly topography.

 Terrain

Major parts of the district are occupied by rugged and uneven terrains/hills constituting parts of the southern extension of Naga Hill ranges, with their elevation ranging from 350 to 1,950 m above mean sea level (AMSL). Of the total geographical area of 4,570 sq. km. of the district, about 5.57%, i.e. 255 sq. km. is the valley portion. A small and narrow valley adjoining Churachandpur having an area extent of 200 sq. km. is present through which the Khuga River, a tributary of Manipur River is flowing towards northern direction. This valley actually forms the southern extension of Manipur valley and is locally known as Khuga valley. In addition, small valley areas are seen around Behiang, Leizangphai and Tuilaphai. The area is mainly drained by the tributaries viz. Khuga, Tuila, Tuili, Leimatak, Tuivai and Barak of Manipur River. Leimatak River and Tuipiilui River, tributaries of Irang River flow towards northerly direction, while the rest of the rivers flow in general southerly direction. Most of these river-courses are structurally controlled and are parallel to sub-parallel with one another, generally flowing in the direction of NNE-SSW. Dendritic to parallel drainage pattern is also noticed in the district.

 Socio-Economic & Cultural Profile

The district is inhabited by several tribes, mainly belonging to the Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zomi group, such as Thadou, Hmar, Paite, Vaiphei and Zou tribes. Apart from these, there are the Gangte, Simte, Mizo, Tedim Chin, and some Manipuri Meiteis. There are also other non-Manipuri ethnic groups like Nepalese, Biharis, Malwaris, and Punjabis. While the Nepalese excel in the milk industry, the Malwaris are well known for their business acumen. Despite the commercial origin of Churachandpur town, the indigenous people have few entrepreneurs and traditionally worked in the government sector. In fact, the town has been over-represented in civil services at the national level and state level.
